Focus: Immigration Law Reform On Friday, May 21, some Chicago area SLW and friends hosted a dinner and breakfast for a group of walkers. At the request of Barbara Mass, SLW almost 50 people offered to help to provide the meal of sloppy joes and fixings for dinner and bagels and yogurt for breakfast. The walkers hoped to focus attention on the need for immigration law reform. They started in Chicago and walked to Woodstock, IL, about 50 miles. Their destination was a detention center near Woodstock where about 200 people are being held for deportation. The dinner and breakfast were served at St. James Parish, Arlington Heights where the walkers spent the night.
SLW, Mary Louise Coccimiglio and Stella Stacken, prepare the meat for sloppy joes.
SLW, Barbara Mass and M. Fidelis Rolfes, wash the fruit for the walkers.
Judy Dressman and friend help serve the meal.
Robin Shornden, ASLW and Judy make sure the chips are easy to get.
The Walkers shared stories of why they were with the group and what it meant to them and family and friends. The individual stories told of pain, separation and commitment to a more just situation for immigrants.
Feed My Starving Children Several SLW have answered the call of SLW, Carrie Miller and Jean Kreiter, to help prepare food packets for children of Haitian and other countries. The day includes a drive to the Aurora location to stuff the packets with high protein dried food. While there, the SLW meet many other wonderful people who are helping including some students who filled enough packets to feed 36 children for a year. The SLW crews included Carrie and Jean and SLW, Laurita Saunders, Genevieve Shea, Rosanne Stump, Stella Stacken and Kris Vorenkamp. Associate, Judy Harrington, has also been a part of the mission.
SLW, Carrie (plaid shirt) and Jean (light blue shirt) work at the packaging.
Volunteers prepare the bins with the food stuffs that the packagers will use.
