Sr.
Barbara Mass, SLW
When I think
of how this all began, I go back to the women religious who
taught me in grade and high school. I wanted to be like them.
So when I graduated from high school, I entered training for
religious life.
After
completion of my first degree, I taught 6th and 8th
grades and loved the interaction with the faculty and students.
Then a call from the community sent me to study in Rome, Italy
and begin preparation to work with new members to religious
life. This was followed by 8 wonderful years of working with
new members, Sisters and members of other congregations.
In 1975,
another call of the Spirit took me into the foundation of the
Sisters of the Living Word. I began teaching at St. Gregory High
School, Chicago, then moved to Notre Dame High School for Boys,
Niles, Illinois and last, Resurrection High School for Girls,
Chicago. High schoolers are a wonderful group of people. As
they search, I needed to search also, to articulate better what
I believe and act in a way that models those beliefs.
In between
all this teaching, my community elected me to serve on two
5-year terms in Leadership. This is a great gift to me. Part
of the gift is the shared journeys of my Sisters. Another part
is being involved in the planning and direction to the future.
Being a
Sister and a member of the Sisters of the Living Word makes me
aware of the presence and power of God in my life and in the
lives of so many other people. Even in the tough moments and
events of now, this is where God has given me the gift of life
and I love opening up each day.
