Sr.
Betty Betzwieser, SLW
In my youth,
the call to religious life led me to the Community of the
Sisters of Christian Charity, Wilmette, Illinois. As my journey
unfolded I became an educator and served in elementary schools
in various states – Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, and
Louisiana.
In the
70’s I began studies in Religious Education at St. Meinrad’s
School of Theology. Courses taken there prepared me to move
from school to parish work as a Director of Religious Education
for Grades 1-4.
After 26
years as a Sister of Christian Charity, the death of my father
in 1974 necessitated my living at home and serving as main
caregiver for my mother.
During
the above transition, many changes took place in the Community.
The Sisters of the Living Word came to birth in 1975. A second
call for me emerged. This new religious order offered me the
opportunity to continue living my vowed life while at home. To
that call in 1975 I gave my “Yes” response and became a Sister
of the Living Word. My ministries to my parent, to school and
to parish work continued.
After my
mother’s death in 1988, I was encouraged to look into a
Sabbatical program that would rejuvenate me. I chose the Sangre
de Cristo program in New Mexico. The 100 days spent at Sangre
were a blessing that continues expression in my life today. The
sabbatical program and my lived experience as a Sister of the
Living Word promote the choice of “New Life.”
In
today’s language, my years in religious life have been “a great
ride.” God’s presence and guidance are my daily challenges and
blessings.
