Sr.
Charlene Baller. SLW
As a
Sister of the Living Word, I have had various ministries. I
began as a teacher at St. Gregory Junior High School in Chicago.
When my father became ill, I was free to see to his needs
outside of school hours. I have always considered this a
blessing. The year after my father died, I had a sabbatical in
Ohio. It was a time of attending religion classes, receiving
counseling and experiencing various methods of prayer and
living. Later when my younger sister had cancer for 9 years, I
was able to companion her, which brought unbelievable graces.
Following my sabbatical, I was pastoral associate at St.
Felicitas parish in Chicago. The ministry involved visiting
homes, sharing faith through teaching RCIA , directing CRHP
programs, and bringing Holy Communion to shut-ins.
I taught
4th grade at Holy Trinity School for the hearing and
hearing-impaired children in Chicago. Later, I became part-time
secretary there. I also conducted adult GED classes for Oakton
Community College. These ministries brought me in contact with
people from foreign countries.
Now
during my first year of retirement, I find more time for
reflection and prayer. I volunteer as a Minister of Care for
St. Mary of the Lake Parish and also minister to our sisters.
I have
found poetry in each new experience as a Sister of the Living
Word. This is because I am conscious of our Mission Statement
to “reflect and affirm the Word in the world, the Word who gives
new life.”
