Sr.
Colette Fahrner, SLW
I grew up on
the south side of Chicago. Because I am the only girl with two
younger brothers, my Dad particularly found it difficult when I
expressed interest in becoming a Sister. It was with lots of
hesitation that my parents gave me their blessing to enter the
religious community whom I grew to know during my elementary
school years.
My
professional training was as a teacher in elementary education.
After a while I received training as a school administrator and
a parish minister. I enjoyed work in school and parish. I was
called by God to become a member of a new religious community,
the Sisters of the Living Word.
With this
new call I also got in touch with an earlier call to become a
missionary. I was employed by the Glenmary Home Missioners to
do outreach work and to teach adults to read in Appalachia.
While at this work my own sense of peace and justice grew.
In
Appalachia I became more aware of the injustices being done to
the earth. The desire to heal earth and to work for its healing
and renewal has become the driving passion of my life.
At
present I am on the staff of Resurrection Retreat Center. Here
my work centers both on creating and leading retreats, and
coordinating restoration efforts on the 86 acres surrounding the
Center. I am actively involved in peace and ecological issues.
I am also a Reiki Practitioner. My life is fulfilling, exciting
and challenging.
