Sr.
Genevieve Shea, SLW
I was barely
out of my teens when I was teaching a class of first grade
children. That was the beginning of thirty years in the
Catholic school system, sometimes as teacher, other times as
principal of the school. In the course of that time I taught
classes from first grade through high school, and then became a
college librarian.
I spent the
year 1970-1971 in Rome studying the theological and scriptural
foundations of apostolic religious life. That experience
prepared me for the major event of 1975 when I was one of ninety
sisters who formed Sisters of the Living Word. It would take
more than a few paragraphs to describe the peace and joy that
move has brought to my life.
I have
been a hospital chaplain, visiting patients and being with their
families. I have been with healthy senior citizens, organizing
a way for them to form an active group enjoying each other’s
company. Since 1992 I have been the archivist of the Sisters of
the Living Word. There is a deep joy in knowing that these
records tell a unique phase of the history of the Catholic
Church and of religious life in America. My work says I believe
in the future and in those who will follow me as Sisters of the
Living Word. I believe they will want to know why we did what
we did and how it made a difference in our lives and in the
lives of those we touched. As I process the records and prepare
ways to make the search easier for inquirers, I feel a deep
admiration for my sisters and their wholehearted devotion to the
mission of the Sisters of the Living Word. My hope is that long
after my work is done others will carry on that spirit of
reflecting Jesus, the Living Word.
