Sr.
Georgene Schumacher, SLW
My ministry
has always carried a conviction that education is integral to
our SLW Mission. I began in secondary education with a short
stint in junior high. Math and science were my fields – these
come “natural” to me. I have taught in urban, rural and inner
city settings and have been graced to connect with people of
diverse cultures.
After 15
years in traditional education, I found a new passion in adult
education – Adult Literacy, GED, ESL, and Life Skills. My
juices really flow when I am working one-on-one with people in
learning situations that directly impact their quality of life.
There are
many gifts that I have received in ministry. I have come to
understand the need for social justice first-hand from people
who are the recipients of injustice. And I am learning to see
my white middle-class values as just that, understanding that
these values are not the best for our global society.
My present
ministry is in SLW Leadership. I work with the Sisters, ensuring
that their ministry and housing choices are true to our SLW
Mission and Direction. It also means determining the number and
type of ministries/housing we can support from our current
financial base, as well as what ministries we can supplement
from our Mission Fund.
I love my
community, but not in a static way. I want to see us continuing
to seek situations in which we are called to minister and live
out Jesus’ radical gospel values, making a home for God’s Word
in the lives of those who need it most.
