Sr. Jean
Krieter, SLW
Life is
cyclical. Hopefully, if I am living life well, my journey takes
me to ever-deeper meaning and commitment. I thought this was
true when our Sisters of the Living Word Community began in
1975. However, as I reflect back on the past 30 years, these
words resonate with an even greater abundance of fullness and
joy.
I have
ministered in various settings, but some common threads weave
throughout all of them. One marvelous thread has been that my
continued education and each ministry prepared me for the next
challenge. Whether working with inner city students or deaf
children, at a crisis center for teen moms and their babies, in
a college classroom teaching future teachers, or at a domestic
violence shelter, I find that my passion is to work with the
poor and disadvantaged.
It energizes
me to help break the cycle of poverty and/or violence. No
matter with whom I am ministering, education is my core
approach. Rather than in the traditional classroom, I am much
more drawn to the natural setting of a Chicago Westside street
or working with people in their homes. I find a beauty in these
people that enriches my soul. They teach me perseverance,
acceptance, simplicity, undying hope, and a spirituality that
embraces the belief that God is always present, even in
suffering.
Our charism
as Living Word is to bring new life as we reflect God’s Word.
All during my life this has been my purpose and strength. The
companionship of my sisters in community has been a great
support for me. My wonderful family and friends have been my
greatest “rooting section.” My life has been blessed.
