Sr.
Joanne Fedewa, SLW
In 1975 God
called me to leave my religious community of Christian Charity
to become a member of the new - founded community - Sisters of
the Living Word. The call from God surprised me, while
energizing me, and challenging me. Acceptance of this new call
was built on a firm foundation of knowing God's love and care
for me. With support from my family and friends, I joined the
Sisters of the Living Word.
The new
title - Sisters of the Living Word - became dearer to me as time
went on. God's Word in Scripture was always a source of POWER
and HEALING. My new community's Mission - "freeing the
oppressed, bringing new life and hope to others while making a
home for God's Word" was definitely my mission also.
From my
parents and family I learned the importance of compassion and
care for others. In elementary school, I was asked by my
teachers to sit next to a student who was mentally challenged so
that I could assist her. From that time on I felt called to
live my life in service to others while committing my life to
God as a celibate religious.
My ministry
of teaching took me to new areas and challenges. When
volunteers were needed to go to North Little Rock - a Home
Mission - I offered, was accepted and commissioned there for
many years teaching, spreading God's Word, and helping people
who suffered from injustices. Feeding the hungry, clothing the
naked and listening to people became a way of life for me.
Following this experience, I served on the formation team in my
community and Leadership. I then, moved on to the core city of
Detroit as Religion Coordinator. In 1989, I was asked to serve
as the first Pastoral Coordinator of Christ the King Parish in
Flint, Michigan. While administering to the Parish, I have been
able to assist people in need - visit and pray with our brothers
and sisters incarcerated in prisons and jail.
I have been
blessed to serve as Pastoral Coordinator of Christ the King
Parish. Collaborating with our Sacramental Minister and my
brothers and sisters in this faith community, we have been able
to fulfill - a long desired dream - that of building a new
church and hall. This dream became a reality in 2002 with the
dedication of this new building - indeed a day of celebration
and thankfulness to our God for the support given by our bishop,
benefactors, and parishioners.
I am very
grateful to God for the gift of life and call to follow Jesus in
the Community of the Sisters of the Living Word. My heart is
filled with love and appreciation for my family, my sisters and
friends who have shown me support and concern. I pray for
vocations to our community so that God's work of "freeing the
oppressed, bringing new life and hope to others and finding a
home for God's Word" may continue. This is Jesus' Mission and
ours as sisters of the Living Word.
