Sr.
Joanne Grib, SLW
At age 16, I
packed my duds and went off to become a Sister of St. Joseph,
third Order of St. Francis.
Immediately
after making my first vows in 1954, I began teaching elementary
school. Over the next 12 years I taught all of the upper
grades. During this time I was going to college on weekends and
at night to obtain a degree in Chemistry and Math. By 1966 I
was teaching Chemistry and Math at Lourdes High School, on the
south side of Chicago. I thoroughly enjoyed the girls who
lovingly called me the “mad scientist with the computer brain.”
I became principal of that school in 1973.
When my term
as principal ended in 1976, I had the unique privilege of
bringing Christ to the marketplace by working at Nalco Chemical
Company as a research chemist. After being there just a year, I
was asked to be in charge of a mobile laboratory that traveled
all across the United States testing waters in oil refineries,
paper mills, steel factories, leather tanneries and waste water
treatment plants.
Then another
unusual thing happened to me. I met, actually lived in the same
apartment building with some sisters of the Living Word. After
much prayer and deliberation, I felt a call to that religious
order. I found a deeper spirituality with these sisters and a
greater sense of mission. So in 1992 I transferred to that
community. It has truly been a blessing for me. As a
Franciscan my goal was to become a Gospel bearer, full of joy
and enthusiasm for speaking and sharing the words of the gospel
with others. As a Living Word I continue that mission.
Even
though I am 70 years old, I continue working full time at
Coldwell Banker as a computer specialist. A reminder to “speak
only life giving words” is posted on a file cabinet outside my
cubicle.
