Sr. John
Boegeman, SLW
All my
life, I had wanted to work with wood, and I often did as I grew
up on our farm. When I went to the convent, I gave up my dream
along with my horse, my rifle, and my blue jeans! I never
thought of doing any of this again except in my nostalgic
imagination.
Although
I didn’t become a Sister of the Living Word for this, when I did
become one, all these things were again a possibility for me if
I chose. Three years after becoming an SLW, I began my
woodworking. I’ve enjoyed doing it now for the last 26 years,
even though a good number of my SLW Community had to be
convinced that it was really a ministry. It gave me some
self-doubt until I began to receive letters from customers
telling me what an inspiration they get from looking at a piece
of my wood on their walls. And I have heard from others who
said how happy they were to own a piece of woodwork made by me.
This restored my confidence, and I found myself working with a
freer mind and spirit. I have never regretted becoming an SLW.
We are a
great Community, and I’ll belong to it until I die.
