Sr. Joyce
Roehl, SLW
In the 8th
grade, I approached my mother about the possibility of joining a
religious community. She said to put my idea on hold until
graduation from high school. In actuality, the idea was put on
hold for the next 10 years.
During a
visit to Wilmette for my cousin’s investing into religious life,
the idea again came to the forefront. To the amazement of many
relatives I entered the Sisters of Christian Charity. That was
42 years ago!
I followed
the Spirit when I joined religious life and I followed the
Spirit to become a Sister of the Living Word. To be an integral
part of the formation of a new community was both overwhelming
and humbling. Those beginning SLW years were some of the best
years of my religious life. It was quite a journey placing
myself in the hands of the Lord more than any other time in my
life.
My ministry
all these years has been in the field of education, in
elementary schools as teacher and principal. I get energy out
of working with these young people and seeing their enthusiasm
for learning and for life. I teach them and in turn they also
teach me. The relationships I have built up with former
students have been a true blessing of my ministry.
In some
ways, these years since the start of the SLW seem to have flown
by. It has been a fantastic time and I know it will continue to
be so because of my faith in our Lord and the love I have for my
community.
