Sr.
Judiann Derhake, SLW
Who would
have ever thought that a skinny country girl from rural Missouri
would end up with an Association Montessori Internationale
Diploma signed by Maria Montessori’s son, Mario, a Bachelor of
Science degree, and 30 years of teaching experience in the
classroom?
It all
started when I decided to be a Maryknoll missionary, but God had
another plan in mind that led me to the energetic and dedicated
group of women, the Sisters of the Living Word. With them I
learned to value deeply a prayerful, simple life and expend my
energies on our mission of Catholic education.
Early
childhood Montessori education has taught me how to think fast,
organize lessons and routines to assure success for the
children, and improvise when discipline needs to be
re-established. All this learning experience is a storehouse I
draw on to give parents techniques that work with young
children.
Teaching has
not been the only joy in life. I’ve learned to bake, quilt,
carve and paint birds, fish and flowers. I continue to work to
generate new ideas, which might provide a steady source of
income for our mission – to spread the WORD, for our community,
and for our future members.
