Sr. Julia
Stump, SLW
I am the
youngest of seven children. When I was four years old, my
oldest sister left for the convent. I believe it was the day my
sister was leaving that I sensed that my mother was feeling a
little sad, so I said to her. “Don’t feel bad, I am going to the
convent, too.”
For the next
fifteen years I felt the desire to enter, but I was also
enjoying my high school years. After high school, I decided to
work first. One Sunday in January, after receiving Holy
Communion, I knew I would never be satisfied until I said
“yes”. By this time, my father was deceased, but my mother gave
her blessing.
Since my
first years on mission, I have been ministering in the South,
first in New Orleans, teaching 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Then
for the past forty years I have been here in Metairie, a suburb
of New Orleans, at St. Edward the Confessor Parish. It was a
new parish and I was one of the two sisters to start the
school.
I taught 1st
grade here for ten years, and now I am a 5th grade homeroom
teacher. For most of these years, I have spent at least half
teaching religion. It is truly a privilege to be in the
position to work with children, sharing the Word of God and His
love with them. I am also active in a number of Parish
Committees.
Being a
member of the Sisters of the Living Word has truly been a
blessing. I see in the Congregation a group of prayerful,
joyful, committed and spirited women.
