Sr.
Kristine Vorenkamp
I was born
in California, but raised in New Orleans. I have experienced
the blessing of continuous support for my religious call from my
wonderful family.
My SLW
ministry began as an elementary teacher. For 13 years my great
joy was to teach children to learn to read, to know and love
God, and to live like Jesus. Besides teaching, I helped to
build the faith community of St. Martha’s Parish in Morton
Grove, Illinois.
The next 6
years I taught at St. Mary Magdalen in Metairie, Louisiana.
Another sister and I began an adult contemporary choir. I also
began postgraduate studies for parish ministry. In 1986 two
other SLW sisters and I began our new mission in San Angelo,
Texas. It was an enriching experience to accompany adults on
their faith journey in the RCIA, and direct the religious ed
programs in 2 parishes. Later, I ministered at Holy Family
Services, a birth center for women with few or no resources in
the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. My awareness was stretched
concerning the huge immigration issues facing the US and
Mexico.
In 1999 a
call came from an SLW sister in Mississippi, “Kris, we need
Spanish speaking sisters up here badly!” Soon I found myself in
rural north Mississippi, as a co-worker with the Glenmary Home
Missioners.
I have come
to realize two aspects about my call. First, it has been a
gradual YES to the Spirit to work with those who are oppressed
by the unjust systems in our society. Secondly, I have left
many places that I called home to me. Over the years so
many people have told me that I make them feel at home, cared
for, and help change their lives for the better.
As an SLW I
am called and sent forth by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. In
that power I have been graced to see and affirm God’s loving
action already in the world, despite the darkness around us
today.
