Sr.
Laurita Saunders, SLW
I grew up in
a family of five lively children on the north side of Chicago.
After graduating from high school, I joined the Sisters of
Christian Charity. In 1942, after my temporary profession of
vows, I was assigned to teach 2nd grade in St. John School,
Detroit, but the primary grades were not for me. Later I was
asked to teach junior high students. I knew that was where I
belonged.
I modeled my
teaching style on my fourth grade teacher, Sister Gilbert, CSJ,
who made teaching come alive. When I taught at St. Raphael
School in Chicago I watched Sister Claracille, SCC, bring fun to
teaching and learning. I was fortunate to have two good
professional models.
In 1975 I
decided to join the Sisters of the Living Word because I wanted
to remain a religious.
However, I
knew it was time after 33 years in the classroom, to look for a
different ministry, which I could do in the newly formed
community. In 1975 I became religious education coordinator for
eight years. Since 1988 I have been hospitality coordinator
while working in the SLW development department. Yearly
development events have kept me busy. Now I am “Jack of all
trades”, ministering to the numerous community and parish
groups, workshops and retreatants who come to use our Living
Word Center space. No two days are alike, which appeals to my
lively nature.
I enjoy
bringing Christ to others by being cheerful and helpful. My
present ministry offers me excellent opportunities to radiate
the SLW spirit!
