Sr.
Louise Bauer, SLW
As one of my
family’s eight children who grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota, I
learned to sew as a child at my mother’s knee. That sewing
proved to be, almost prophetically, the beginning of my Sisters
of the Living Word ministry. Here in St. Paul, I have turned a
sewing business into my SLW ministry. In my home, sewing
machines of various makes and vintages hug the walls of my sun
porch. Just beyond the sun porch, three sergers, two sewing
machines, and all my sewing materials fill what was once the
living room. On the wall of this living room-turned-sewing room
is a plaque containing my ministry motto: “A day hemmed in
prayer seldom unravels.” When I’m sewing, I pray for my
customers who often tell me what is happening in their lives.
Besides
making and altering clothes for my customers, I also teach
summer sewing classes for boys and girls between 7 and 14 years
of age. Their first project is a tote bag, and then they
progress to personal clothing items such as shorts, pants,
skirts, t-shirts, tops, etc. It is a thrill for me to teach
children because of their eagerness and willingness to learn.
Each summer, for the past 12 years, I have over 100 young
students learning the art of sewing. Watch for this new
generation of sewers and designers.
My sister
and brother-in-law own the home where I live and work. I helped
them fix the sewing area, and I now rent from them. I thank God
every day for my SLW vocation and sewing ministry.
