Sr. M.
Fidelis Rolfes, SLW
I am the
youngest of five children and I grew up in a very faith-filled
family. When I went to a Catholic School, I had much contact
with the Sisters of Christian Charity. I entered the Convent
after my freshman year of high school. I began to experience
the happiness, joy and peace of the Call.
In the
summer of 1975, I felt God calling me once more to leave the
security of the known and venture into uncharted paths by
joining the Sisters of the Living Word. With this acceptance of
greater responsibilities came life, newness and participation as
well as happiness, joy and peace.
My first 20
plus years in the convent were spent among children in the
classroom, or in the school library. Preparing those youngsters
to receive the Sacraments was indeed a great privilege. I also
enjoyed teaching the 3 R’s and all the activities connected to
imparting knowledge.
Now I am
almost in my twenty-fifth year of health care service, and this
I believe is where I have found my niche in ministry. I am a
Chaplain in a Catholic nursing home. This ministry energizes
me.
During an
interview at evaluation time, one of my coordinators remarked
that she thought one of my greatest strengths was with the
dying. This touched me and is very dear to me. It is what I
believe my ministry is all about: to be present to those who
grieve, but especially to be there for those who have no one to
comfort them in their last hour, to hold their hand and thank
them for the legacy they are leaving behind, to free them by
reassuring them that they will meet a very loving and forgiving
God.
