Sr. Marilita Roy, SLW

It was the year 1974, the time of my 30-day retreat in preparation for my final vows.  I felt a surge of God’s love throughout the retreat and a real experience of spiritual freedom.  I was being prepared the next year to make a decision to be part of a new community, dedicated to freeing the oppressed and bringing new life.  It was, in effect, our own being freed from oppression and experiencing new life in the birth of a new community, the Sisters of the Living Word!

Each day I am eager and excited to be a part of this new community.  Presently, I find that my ministry as an SLW takes a new expression as a Title I Reading Teacher for the Catapault Learning Company. This year, I have a classroom at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, Louisiana, where I teach small groups of students from K-8. Our classroom is both welcoming and innovative.

An extension of my ministry is a volunteer experience on Saturdays at the Therapeutic Riding Center at La Place, Louisiana.  I arrive early at the barn where I groom and saddle one of the horses.  Then I lead it to our arena to exercise as we await our clients who may be mentally challenged, autistic, have multiple sclerosis, spinal bifida, cerebral palsy, emotional or learning disabilities.  With volunteer side walkers, we form a team of leader, rider and horse to bring healing and happiness to each person who participates.

God has been present and faithful to me in the past, so I look forward with joy and hope to a future of bringing new life and freedom to the oppressed.
