Sr.
Marlene Geimer, SLW
I had one
sister and my mom and dad to guide me along my life’s journey.
I remember I was in 5th grade when a Maryknoll
missionary talked to us about the great work that was being done
for the poor. I felt that I would like to do the same some
day.
During high
school, again I experienced Sisters who not only taught us about
our faith and religion but went beyond their words into action
to help the poor. One Sister in particular had extreme energy
around her quest to help the children of Chicago. I liked that
and thought I could do the same.
After a year
of college, I entered the Sisters of Christian Charity and
studied to be a teacher. I began in the elementary level,
taught in high school, and became a principal. I was principal
of three schools in Chicago. I then was treasurer of the
Sisters of the Living Word for eleven years.
One thing I
learned as a teacher/principal is that you teach more by action
than you do by word. Teaching is about being present to the
children/teacher/parent.
Presently, I
am the Administrative Assistant to the Pastoral Life Coordinator
(who happens to be a layperson) at a parish in Elmhurst,
Illinois. This position is new to the parish and exciting
because the concept of having a parish run by a layperson in the
Diocese of Joliet is what I believe the future Church will have
to embrace as clergy decrease in numbers. Since I have been at
my new parish I was asked to become the parish facilitator for
the “Protecting God’s Children” program. I feel honored to
continue to teach on the adult level and help adults face the
reality of child sexual abuse.
