Sr. Mary
Ambrose Wack, SLW
During my
early years in a Catholic high school, I felt God’s call to the
religious life and at 16 was happy to enter the Sisters of
Christian Charity. I taught in grade school and high school for
45 years. I was also principal and librarian.
In 1979 I
felt the call to join the Sisters of the Living Word. I was not
an original member, but after a Jesuit Program of discernment, I
decided it would be of great benefit to me for ongoing growth to
transfer.
As an SLW I
had the privilege of coordinating a Social Care Program in a
north side parish in Chicago for 9 years. My contacts with the
poor and needy made me aware of real poverty, oppression, and
homelessness. I was convinced I had a personal call to extend
my ministry to the aged, sick, and needy in the Parish/Community
in which I lived.
In 1988 I
retired and moved to Arlington Heights, well prepared to
continue this ministry as a volunteer. I live at the SLW Center
and am blessed to belong to St. James Parish. For 16 years I
have been a Parish-appointed Minister of Care, mandated for
Eucharistic ministry to the sick/elderly. Weekly I visit the
residents in the Nursing Home nearby and bring the Eucharist to
the Catholics. My retirement has been constructive and
enriching. I’ve learned much from my elderly friends about
suffering, patience, and perseverance.
Retirement is a gift, a time of challenges and options for
ministerial presence, a harvest time. I’m a communication
person for a Golden Age Friendship Club and a Scripture Study
group is a real avenue for faith sharing. Many things I can do
on my own initiative, as phoning to the homebound, sending
cards, helping a neighbor in need, and visiting a lonely person.
