Sr. Mary
Imelda Fischer, SLW
In August of
1975, after two days of prayer, I joined the new Community that
God was calling into being. No doubt I will always ponder the
profound meaning of our title, Living Word --Jesus, the Living
Word of God becoming human for us. I can help everyone with whom
I come in contact to know and appreciate God’s Word -- spoken,
lived, printed.
Soon after
the founding of our Community, I was missioned to St. Mary
Magdalen School in Metairie, Louisiana where I was librarian in
a grade school of about 900 students. I taught 2nd grade
religion classes on Saturdays. We were a fine group of 10
sisters adapting to the new Community.
In 1984 I
asked to help with the care of my Mother, who was living alone
in St. Louis. While there, I worked at The Cardinal Ritter
Institute, an agency of the St. Louis Archdiocese that cares for
the elderly. After 2 years, I moved to another facility. I
enjoyed helping the residents and worked there for 16 years. I
lived with the School Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Dominic Savio
Convent for two years and sixteen years at St. Gabriel Convent.
On weekends I helped Mother with personal needs, shopping,
cleaning, and preparing food. I will always be grateful to my
Community for permitting me to help with the care for Mother
until she died in 1998 at the age of 94.
In 2002 I
was asked by our Leadership Team to move to Arlington Heights to
assist in our Development Office. I am convinced that God has
been truly very generous and good to me through my family, both
Communities, all the people I have known in various ways, and in
the variety of circumstances through the years. May the Living
Word of God always live and work in me.
