Sr. Mary
Joel Curcio, SLW
Among my
earliest memories is the day my Father returned from the navy.
Clearly, I remember the excitement in the household upon
receiving his long distance call telling of the day of his
return home. Like most, my childhood was dotted with memorable
events like the arrival of siblings, four in all, school and
church events, and family life with wonderful extended family
gatherings.
At the end
of my senior year of high school, with a planned future in the
medical profession, I was asked the question: “What about
joining the Convent and becoming a nun?” That question launched
me on a life’s journey that continues today. There have been
many different places and paths that my journey has taken me.
I’ve been in the inner city of Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit.
I have been an educator, a parish minister, a director of
finance, and a director of development. In rural Mississippi I
am a program manager for social service and economic development
in two of the nation’s poorest counties. That question put to
me years ago was a defining moment that I never regret
responding to.
My
individual journey is part of the fiber of the journey of the
Living Word Community. The road to the future will have its
twists and turns, ups and downs. But with vision,
determination, collaboration and openness to the calling of the
Spirit, it can be an adventure one would not want to miss.
