Sr. Mary
Nicholas Eiden, SLW
I am from
Minnesota, where I was blessed to grow with faith-filled parents
on a dairy farm. We seven children learned to work hard, as we
were happy and secure together as a family. I played the role of
teaching Sister with my younger sisters and brother, thanks to
the inspiration of the Sisters who taught me at Guardian Angel
School in Chaska, Minnesota.
I taught for
many years in the North, especially in Chicago. As a Community,
we Sisters of the Living Word feel that our God is asking us to
serve the poor. For almost half of my teaching years, I taught
in inner city areas. In 1992 I left SLW friends and dear
Chicago with a heavy heart. It seemed that our God asked me to
venture out into the Baptist Belt of Mississippi, where Catholic
teachers were at a minimum. Never did I dream that I would live
in Mississippi! When I was in Canton, Mississippi, I learned
quickly about the deep faith of my black and white Protestant
friends.
The prayer,
support, and friendship of my Living Word Sisters and Associates
have always been crucial in my life. Here in Belle Chasse,
Louisiana, where I am presently teaching, I am blessed to be
part of a faith-alive parish and solid Catholic School. Here,
too, I periodically take a group of my 5th graders to
visit the nursing home. How well children and the elderly
relate!
Last
summer I celebrated my 50th Anniversary. I was
delighted that so many of my family and friends could witness
our spirit of joy and gratitude. Living Word has been a source
of new life for me. We meet each year for a week of Assembly to
set goals and to celebrate life together. These are days when I
experience God’s special way of telling all of us, “I love you!
Please go out and tell others that Jesus loves them dearly!”
