Sr. Norma
Thelen, SLW
I entered
the Sisters of Christian Charity after graduating from St. Mary
High School in Westphalia, Michigan. It was during my years
with the Sisters of Christian Charity that the foundation of my
spirituality took root, and I am very grateful for this.
In the
summer of 1975 the Holy Spirit was calling me to a new group. I
followed the call, though it was painful to leave friends, and
risky to enter the unknown. Even today, I think almost daily of
the awesomeness of being called to be Living Word.
Our
Assemblies bring about an excitement and seriousness as together
we ponder prayerfully the future, and decide where and how our
focus needs to be.
Another
value for me is to live with Community members. I appreciate
being able daily to share prayer, responsibilities, and being
accountable to each other.
During my
first 25 years as a vowed religious sister, it was my privilege
to bring the Word to children in Catholic elementary schools in
Louisiana, Illinois and Michigan. Then in 1984, I began my
ministry with senior citizens in Michigan and in 1993 with
elders in Illinois. Presently I continue to reach out in love
and compassion as the coordinator of health care for my own
Sisters of the Living Word. I endeavor to bring the joy and
serenity of the Living Word through kind words, acknowledging
each person, and lending a listening ear to elders in nursing
homes and retirement residences. It is life giving to help
people sustain dignity, independence, and purpose in the autumn
and winter stages of life.
In my
prayers daily, I ask God to help me and all my sisters to be
genuine Sisters of the Living Word, reflecting and affirming the
Word in the World, the Word who continually frees the oppressed
and gives new life. I am proud and humbled to be a Sister of
the Living Word.
