Sr.
Phoebe Marshall, SLW
Maya Angelou
has a saying, “When you learn, teach. When you receive, give.”
This philosophy actually came to me at a very early age.
I believe I
was born with the gifts and desire to teach others what my
parents and teachers had taught me about God and about helping
others. There were no flashes of light inspiring me; just the
simple awareness that this was what God had planned for me.
After many
years of classroom teaching (every grade from 1st
through college), I have come to another happy period of my
life, “retirement.” The retirement is from a ministry, but not
from our mission to reflect God’s Word and bring new life. As a
Sister of the Living Word today I have transcribed many of the
oral histories of the members of our community. This has been a
grace as I read over and over how we have felt the tangible
presence of God in our life and ministries.
I am also
happy to be of assistance in the Office of New Membership.
There I do the nitty-gritty tasks that help the formation
directress. My experience there has assured me that many young
women today also believe that “when they learn, they should
teach; when they receive, they should give”.
Those who
know me say I am “a young 83 year-old.” For that I am grateful
to God, to all the young people I have taught and to all the
young adults I see today.
