Sr.
Theresa Weber, SLW
My life as a
Sister of the Living Word has been very exciting, especially
since I got involved in the ministry of the elderly, the poor
and the oppressed. At present I am working as a part time
Activities Director at Stapleton Center in Detroit. I take the
residents shopping and on cultural and educational outings.
Once in a while I get a live band for parties, and it’s amazing
how those stiff hips and legs move and kick!
I also
belong to the Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance, an
organization that really helps me fulfill the SLW goal of
speaking for the voiceless. We have marched in front of various
stores, particularly Wal-Mart, to encourage them to stop buying
their merchandise from sweatshops.
I have been
a member of an all black parish, St. Elizabeth, for 30 years. I
belong to the choir and have been greatly enriched by their deep
faith and their culture. Our liturgy is very high-spirited and
I always come away enriched and energized.
Working
with the poor can be gratifying and also overwhelming at times.
Sometimes their demands are more than I can give. I take my
fears and cares to the Lord. He has never turned me down, but
picks up the persons in need and carries them to a safe
shelter. I feel God’s presence with me always, and together we
carry the burdens of those we love, because they are indeed our
brothers and sisters.
