Sr.
Veronica Hoffmann, SLW
My decision
to join the Sisters of the Living Word in 1975 was a very
peaceful experience for me -- one that I will never forget. On
my way home from our initial meeting, I felt as if the world had
been lifted off my shoulders.
Becoming and
being an SLW has challenged me to take risks by departing from
what had become familiar, safe, and secure, and trusting in an
unknown future as I discerned new directions in my life’s
journey.
In 1975, I
began my secretarial career at St. Gregory High School in
Chicago. In 1981, I decided to leave Chicago so that I could
live and minister in my home state of Minnesota where I
originally grew up on a farm. I served as secretary for about
30 faculty members in the Math, Science, and Psychology
Departments at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul,
Minnesota for 16 years. After some years, I was nominated for
the “Support Staff of the Year Award.” After 16-years at the
college, I began an 8-month job search, which ended with finding
a secretarial position with Family Service, Inc. I chose Family
Service, Inc. because its values fit so well with our SLW Vision
Statement. In the summer of 2003, Family Service, Inc. merged
with Children's Home Society of Minnesota. New ministry sites
and my work with the people I served have always brought me new
life and energy. My organizational skills, efficiency in
getting work accomplished, and attention to details are
trademarks of my SLW secretarial ministries.
Risk, peace,
and new life have been the hallmarks of my life as an SLW. Now
I look forward to retirement and the sunset years of my life
which will be another life-giving experience for me—having the
leisure to enjoy life, spending more time in prayer, not being
tied down to a daily schedule, and having the freedom to do
whatever I want to do.
