Sr.
Virginia King, SLW
Although
God’s call came to me first when I was 10 years old, I struggled
with answering until I was a few months short of 24. When I
entered the Sisters of Christian Charity in 1957, I felt sure
that God had called me to that religious community.
In 1975, the
Sisters of the Living Word, was founded. My call to the Sisters
of the Living Word was as clear as my original invitation to
give my life to God. I answered this second call a little more
quickly.
After making
temporary vows as an SCC, I embarked on the ministry of
education. This involvement has taken various forms, as teacher
and as administrator in both elementary and high school, as
pastoral associate and as business administrator for an
inner-city parish and school.
My ministry
has carried me from suburban and urban Chicago and New Orleans,
to the sugar cane country of rural, Southeast Louisiana, and
back to inner city Chicago. Presently I am serving as business
officer for a Chicago inner city, African American/Hispanic
parish. The student body of the school is almost entirely
African-American and mainly non-Catholic.
My ministry
at Visitation offers me daily opportunity to live the SLW
Mission, Stewardship, and Vision Statements. It is in the
school that I feel I am really involved in a ministry that
“frees the oppressed and gives new life” and that “weaves a
network of connections among diverse peoples and in dissonant
situations.”
My
ministry of trying to keep our finances “in the black” instead
of “in the red” helps to keep “the Word alive on the boulevard”
(55th Street), the Word who continually frees the oppressed and
gives new life.”
